What is S.A.M?
S.A.M is a mathematics enrichment/acceleration centre that teaches Mathematics to children ages 4-12 in small interactive classrooms of 4-8 students.
The S.A.M curriculum consists of more than 30,000 pages of unique, meticulously designed worksheets based on the world-renowned Singaporean Mathematics.
What is Singapore Mathematics?
Singapore maths is a teaching method based on the national mathematics curriculum used for kindergarten through sixth grade in Singapore. The term was originally coined in the United States to describe an approach, originally developed in Singapore, to teaching students to learn and master fewer mathematical concepts at greater detail as well as having them learn these concepts using a three-step learning process.
Is Singapore maths really rated top in the World?
Yes, Singapore students are the world’s best in mathematics and science, according to a global benchmarking study. Primary 4 pupils and Secondary 2 students here topped both subjects in the 2015 Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS), a widely recognised achievement test by policymakers and educators worldwide. Singapore also have the highest achieving students in the Pisa tests. The influential Pisa rankings, run by the OECD, are based on tests taken by 15-year-olds in more than 70 countries. Click here to see the results in Pisa rankings.
What makes S.A.M and Singapore math effective?
Singapore Math is centred around a Thinking Approach learning math. Numbers can be broken down and restructured in many different ways, thus developing the child’s fluency in number sense and mental computation. As a result, number bonds help children in building the foundation to master addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. The Bar Model Method is a unique characteristic of Singapore Math. Bar modelling is used as a visual approach to solving math problems, allowing children to understand, interpret and conceptualize word problems. The Bar Model Method translates the words in a problem into a visual representation, facilitating the work involved when solving for the solution
What makes S.A.M different from other Mathematics Centres?
These days, a student requires more than just Rote learning to excel in Maths. At S.A.M, we focus on skills such as Critical Thinking, Heuristics, Logical Reasoning, Metacognitive Understanding, Modelling Techniques and Situational Word Problems, amongst others. Collectively, we term this as A Holistic Approach to learning Mathematics. Throughout our program, from the way Trainers engage students in the Classroom, to the way questions are phrased and how solutions are presented in our Worksheets, we adopt this Holistic Approach. By the end of our program, S.A.M students will be well equipped with an array of skills to confidently embrace future challenges in the world of numbers.
Is S.A.M relevant to South African students?
The math topics taught at S.A.M do not differ from the current South African Curriculum. What differs is the approach to teaching these topics. S.A.M teaches math using the world-renowned Singapore Method. The primary aim of the curriculum is to enable students to develop their ability in mathematical problem-solving; this is the heart of Singapore Math and S.A.M. The South African curriculum is based on a structured approach to teaching. The S.A.M program uses a spiral or scaffolding method of learning, which is to say that each topic is mastered before continuing to the next. Spiral learning allows for a more in-depth understanding of the topics being taught. Other features unique to Singapore Math include number bonds, the CPA method and bar modelling. These powerful teaching techniques are not used in South African Schools. S.A.M’s unique program offers the perfect compliment to your child’s existing school program.
Is S.A.M a tutoring centre?
S.A.M enrichment centers are not tutoring centers. Tutoring centers are primarily focused on correcting a child’s specific struggle in a subject area, with the immediate goal to boost the academic results of that subject by using isolated teaching methods. S.A.M is a learning center that focuses on an in-depth understanding and a meaningful application of mathematics in the real world. S.A.M uses the world-renowned Singapore Method for teaching mathematics to children. Some of the distinctive attributes of this method include the spiral or scaffolding method of learning, meaning each topic is mastered before moving on to the next. Another is the Concrete / Pictorial / Abstract approach, which promotes a tangible relationship between math and the real world. A third is the concept of number bonds which explores the different ways that all numbers can be broken down. This unique pedagogy promotes a holistic approach to learning mathematics.
